Question: What do we learn from the things we do well?
Question: What do we learn from the things we do wrong?
Even when the best op plans exist, disasters overwhelm everyone and everything. Individuals improvise, authorities scramble to meet their responsibilities, and everyone tries to perform under conditions of absolute mayhem. Coincidence and improvisation are indeed the Hallmarks of genuine disaster: a truism, for, after all, once well-managed, such events are no longer defined as disastrous. There are in the story, as in real disasters, moments in which certainty about what to do is simply non-existent, moments of chaos and of confusion, without final resolution.
Science doesn’t always do so well when things fall apart. And when the dust settles after the impact, there are no guaranteed happy endings The story is, of course, full of people who make mistakes.
